It’s cocktail hour! Get out your ice-cubes and shakers, don your glad rags and join bartenders extraordinaire Mark Miodownik and Andrea Sella to find the blend of ingredients, technique and science that make the perfect cocktail.
Gin Fizz: learn the science of foams and how to create them in cocktails for that perfect classy creamy top. You’ll need gin, sugar, limes, fizzy water, an egg, and access to a freezer.
Mark Miodownik is a materials engineer and Professor of Materials and Society at UCL and Director of the UCL Institute of Making. Mark is a broadcaster and writer on science and is a regular presenter of science and engineering BBC TV programmes. He wrote the New York Times best-selling book Stuff Matters. He is a member of Cheltenham Science Festival Advisory Group.
Andrea Sella is Professor of Chemistry at UCL with research interests in the rare earth elements and in the synthesis of materials. He was awarded the Royal Society’s Faraday Prize for science communication in 2015. He is a member of Cheltenham Science Festival Advisory Group.
