FameLab International Finalists announced

Thousands of viewers from 75 countries tuned in to the FameLab International 2020 online semi final heats to watch 20 scientists take to the virtual stage to deliver a three-minute scientific talk in an accessible and engaging way.

Following the hotly-contested FameLab International 2020 online semi final heats, a panel of judges and global audiences have selected the ten competitors who will compete for the title of global champion in the International Online Final on 26 November.

Thousands of viewers from 75 countries tuned in to the FameLab YouTube channel to enjoy a thought-provoking programme of three-minute scientific talks from the 20 semi finalists which introduced audiences to a range of cutting-edge international research topics including aspects of human and animal psychology, medical innovations, as well as environmental research including saving mangroves and using coconut jelly to clean up oil spills.

For the first time, this year an audience vote was introduced at the semi final stage to determine two places in the international final – a feature that proved popular with global audiences with over 7400 votes cast from 75 countries.

Announced today at a results show hosted by UK science communicator and broadcaster Greg Foot, the ten FameLab International 2020 finalists through to International Final on 26 November are:

  • Australia: Cody Frear
  • Brazil: Gabriela Ramos Leal (audience choice)
  • Egypt: Mahmoud Mohamed Tareq Mostafa Beshir (audience choice)
  • Kazakhstan: Shokhista Ismailzhanova
  • Korea: Gayun Bu
  • Malaysia: Atteleth Don Peris
  • Qatar: Ahmad Maani
  • South Africa: Pinky Mokwena
  • Switzerland: Sauradeep Majumdar
  • UK: Rebecca Ellis

Semi final judge Professor Sheena Cruickshank, an immunology researcher at The University of Manchester said: ‘I’ve really enjoyed this experience – the variety of science that they all conveyed, the way they used their bodies, their voice, their props, their enthusiasm – I’m completely bowled over!’

Suzi Gage, a lecturer at Liverpool University, author and blogger, added: ‘The quality of all of the talks was so high! I was just so impressed with how inventive people were.’
