Music Festival Early On-Sale

First Proms & Syde Weekend On Sale for Cheltenham Music Festival 2018

Posted by on

In plenty of time for Christmas, tickets for the 2018 Cheltenham Music Festival Town Hall Proms are going on sale. A glittering line-up of star performers and conductors are set to make their way to Cheltenham Town Hall next July.

Sir Mark Elder conducts The Hallé in Elgar’s Symphony No 1 together with Mozart and Strauss opera arias performed by soprano Louise Alder – finalist in this year’s BBC Cardiff Singer of the World -on Wednesday 4 July.

One of the greatest living musicians – and one of the violin greats of all time – Maxim Vengerov performs sonatas by Brahms and Mendelssohn’s Octet on Thursday 5 July with soloists from the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra.

Martyn Brabbins conducts the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and 2016 BBC Young Musician of the Year winner Sheku Kanneh-Mason in Elgar’s Cello Concerto on Friday 6 July. The concert also includes music by Howells, Holst, Vaughan Williams and Parry, all of whom have strong local links.

Pianist and conductor Sir András Schiff performs an all-Haydn programme – a symphony, a concerto and a mass setting – with the Choir and Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment on Sunday 8 July.

World-famous mezzo-soprano Dame Sarah Connolly joins harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani for a weekend of music at Syde Manor, in homage to J S Bach’s favourite Leipzig coffee house in the 1720s, the Café Zimmermann (Saturday 30 June & Sunday 1 July). The four concert series will include performances of Bach’s Goldberg Variations, keyboard concertos and cantatas.

This is Meurig Bowen’s final Cheltenham programme after being Music Festival Director for the last decade. He heads off to new artistic planning roles with BBC National Orchestra of Wales and St George’s Bristol in January. He said “I’m proud of the programme we’ve put together for 2018 and I am happy to hand it over to my successor in anticipation of our best Festival yet. The Proms are a great introduction to the Music Festival and Cheltenham’s iconic Town Hall is a wonderful place to hear music.”
