The closing concert of the 2021 Festival sees the Festival debut of the 12 Ensemble, with a programme conceived for the medieval splendour of Gloucester Cathedral. An un-conducted string ensemble, the group have forged a reputation for their modern, dynamic and virtuosic style, and this concert represents a true distillation of their revolutionary approach to music-making; inventively blending the ancient with the modern. Beginning with their own arrangement of Dowland’s haunting Renaissance elegy, the 12 Ensemble seamlessly slip into the 21st century with iconic modern masterpieces alongside a brand-new commission from Jonathan Woolgar, before returning full circle to Biber’s astonishingly progressive 17th Century ‘Battalia’, a work that in itself transcends time and space.

Spunk, originality and class.

Gloucester Cathedral

A warm welcome awaits you at Gloucester Cathedral – one of the finest medieval buildings in the country and steeped in history, from royal coronations and burials to Harry Potter film sets. Begun in 1089 and remodelled over four centuries, its architectural magnificence encompasses Norman and English Gothic styles. The extraordinary fan-faulted medieval cloisters and Great East Window are national treasures and the Lady Chapel houses some of the finest Arts & Crafts glass in the country.

Experience the beautiful Cathedral up close. Take a 360° virtual tour, customised by kind permission of Tetbury-based artist and photographer Maria Stengard-Green for this year’s Cheltenham Music Festival.
