Internationally renowned as a cellist, improviser and innovator, Matthew Barley’s musical world is focused on projects that connect people in different ways, blurring the boundaries of traditional concert formats. He brings to Gloucester Cathedral a new programme, ‘Ludwig’, originally conceived to celebrate the Beethoven anniversary in 2020, and which takes the audience on an interactive exploration of Beethoven’s cello sonatas, weaving performance, discussion, storytelling and improvisation to shed new light on the man and his music.
A warm welcome awaits you at Gloucester Cathedral – one of the finest medieval buildings in the country and steeped in history, from royal coronations and burials to Harry Potter film sets. Begun in 1089 and remodelled over four centuries, its architectural magnificence encompasses Norman and English Gothic styles. The extraordinary fan-faulted medieval cloisters and Great East Window are national treasures and the Lady Chapel houses some of the finest Arts & Crafts glass in the country.
