Shostakovich String Quartet No. 3 in F major Op. 73 (35’)
Founded by violinist Tamsin Waley-Cohen, the Albion Quartet unites four outstanding young string players, brought together by a shared belief in the visceral power of the string quartet. Making their Festival debut, the Quartet present a delightful menu of three courses; Haydn’s elegant, effervescent and innately human Op. 20 quartet followed by Freya Waley-Cohen’s Snap Dragon, which mimics its name, spiky and fiery, with complex snaps, cracks and explosions. A defining work, Shostakovich’s Third String Quartet plumbed new depths for the composer and secured his position as one of the greatest quartet writers of the century.
