Mahan Esfahani harpsichord
Dame Sarah Connolly mezzo-soprano
J.S.Bach works to include Goldberg Variations (30 June 4pm), keyboard concertos and cantatas.
Saturday 30 June, 4pm and 7.30pm
The incomparably brilliant, charismatic Iranian-American harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani opens the 2018 Cheltenham Music Festival with a weekend of intimate concerts in the stunning setting of Syde Manor. This four-concert series pays tribute to Bach’s favoured Leipzig coffee house, where he led regular musical gatherings – the original Coffee Concerts – throughout the 1730s. Including music by Buxtehude, Pergolesi and Lully alongside plenty of Bach, Esfahani opens the series with the Goldberg Variations, and mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly brings this special weekend to a close with arias from Bach’s cantatas Widerstehe doch der Sünde and Ich habe genug and a complete performance of Vergnügte Ruh, beliebte Seelenlust.
Directions to this venue will be emailed to bookers of the Music Festival concert weekend prior to the event.
The venue is 10 miles south of Cheltenham.
