One of jazz piano’s all time greats, Fred Hersch is a twelve-time Grammy nominee. He has been an influential creative force on the next generation of jazz pianists for more than three decades, with former students including Brad Mehldau and Ethan Iverson. In this UK exclusive, he gives a solo concert in the intimate surrounds of the Parabola Arts Centre. His colleague Jason Moran said: ‘Fred at the piano is like LeBron James on the basketball court. He’s perfection.’

Nowhere is the boundless range and emotional diversity of Hersch’s artistry as evident as in his breathtaking solo performances. JazzTimes has hailed his unaccompanied playing as ‘a complete, self-sufficient, uniquely pure art form,’ while All About Jazz has remarked that ‘when it comes to the art of solo piano in jazz, there are two classes of performers: Fred Hersch and everybody else.’

Recorded for broadcast on BBC Radio 3.

Cheltenham Ladies' College, Parabola Arts Centre

Parabola Arts Centre is located in a Grade II listed building in the glamorous Montpellier district of Cheltenham. The centre was built as a facility for students of Cheltenham Ladies’ College and to be used as a public arts centre by the local community.

The original, listed Bayshill House was transformed into a gallery, bar and foyer area. The villa also houses all the rehearsal spaces, offices, video editing suite, dance studio and library. This means that the regular activity of the building takes place in the light, beautifully restored listed building.
