Got a question about how to build your career in the music industry? Following on from the success of last year, we are offering FREE one-to-one advice sessions on a range of topics to musicians. Industry experts will be available to answer questions during a short, pre-booked session. This year’s experts and themes are:
Building Your Business as a Musician (Nick Lawrence, Founder and CEO of Big Star)
Nick began his career in the square mile working for a variety of financial and commercial organisations, and has since built several businesses from start-up to PLC, while establishing an independent record label and working as a DJ both nationally and internationally. He founded Big Star, a company of business managers and accountants to the music industry, and in 2014 was awarded Music Industry Advisor of the Year followed by inclusion in the Music Business Worldwide top 50 lawyers and accountants in 2018.
Nick will be happy to advise on how to take your talent and build a business around it. This could include how to set-up as self-employed or a company, the legal requirements you need to meet, the best systems to use, dealing with tax at home and abroad etc. He can also answer other business and accounting-related queries. If you’ve got a question about money, he’s the man!
Funding, Royalties and Publishing (Naomi Belshaw, WildKat PR)
Naomi joined the WildKat team in May 2018 after working at PRS for Music and PRS Foundation for number of years. Naomi brings with her experience of funding, music publishing, licensing and royalties and is keen to help musicians and composers understand the music industry better. Through WildKat’s quick-fire ‘ask any question’ consultancy sessions, individuals including musicians, labels, management, designers and creatives are able to learn about different parts of the sector.
Naomi is available to answer questions on these themes: Funding 101; #Royalties – how to get paid for writing music; Music Publishing for Dummies.
