Literature for Schools 2020

Our first ever digital festival of amazing Author Events, Creative Challenges Draw-Alongs and Stories Aloud took place in October and it was fantastic to see so many schools in Gloucestershire and beyond taking part!

Cheltenham Festivals invited schools everywhere to create their very own Cheltenham Literature Festival @ School with our Digital Schools Programme, which was available for all to access free of charge from 5 October 2020 – 31 December 2020.

Schools created a festival atmosphere in their classrooms with Greg James and Chris Smith, Katherine Rundell, Joseph Coelho, Dapo Adeola, Anthony McGowan and Elizabeth Acevedo among the inspiring authors, poets and illustrators taking part in our unique events. Teachers were invited to download the FREE Create Your Own Festival pack with notes on the books, creative challenges and templates for activities.

The CLiPPA (CLPE Poetry Award) was celebrated at the Festival for the very first time and the winner announced in a very special live Poetry Show on Friday 9 October.

In response to the school closures in January 2021, the digital programme for schools was made available for an extended period, until February half term.

What did teachers say about our Festival in 2020?

  • 100% of teachers rated the online schools’ events as excellent or good; 95% rated them as excellent.

It was so special to have a shared event across the school despite not being able to be together.  Thank you very much!

My class have been so engaged, ALL children have wanted to write their own poem

Year 3 loved hearing how you can invent your own characters and bring them to life through words and illustration. First-hand, child-friendly interviews with authors are priceless and an engaging activity like a draw along captivated our classes.

All events were fun and engaging. The children loved the interactive elements and wanted us to purchase some of the books after watching the videos.
