FameLab Academy Winners 2018

Diet Drink Dilemma

Congratulations to Huw Barlow-Kay from Pate’s Grammar School who in just three minutes dazzled the judges with scientific knowledge and humour, meeting the criteria of content, clarity and charisma in his talk about some of the health implications of drinking diet coke.

In a year with more competition than ever before, there were three runners-up, with awards going to Annabel Sykes of St Edward’s School, Lyall Wood of Wyedean School and Sneha Vijayakumar from Stroud High School.
The students covered a wide range of topics including the value of sleep, happiness, the psychology of magic, plastic pollution and even the fear of public speaking!

Judges this year were Jo Durrant Events Reporter and Presenter at BBC Radio Gloucestershire, Dr Jamie Gallagher, Science Communicator and Sarah Flannigan Chief Information Officer at EDF Energy. After the final Sarah commented ‘FameLab Academy’s reputation speaks for itself, so I had high expectations for today. What surprised me was how much the students taught me. I spent much of the afternoon speechless.’

Over 1600 pupils from 14 schools across Gloucestershire have taken part this year. New schools for 2018 were Cheltenham Ladies College and Churchdown School. They joined All Saints Academy, Chosen Hill School,The Cotswold School, Dean Close School, Dene Magna School, Pate’s Grammar School, Rednock School, St Edward’s School, Stroud High School, Thomas Keble School, who have all taken part before.

The students were supported by some inspiring STEM mentors from Cardiff Metropolitan University, EDF Energy, Hartpury University, Renishaw, NOV, Safran Landing Systems, Wynne-Jones IP.

The competition was expertly compered by Greg Foot who has hosted multiple BBC series and racked up more than 20 million YouTube hits answering curious questions.
