FameLab UK 2017

Our 10th anniversary UK Final saw an incredible show at London’s Science Museum, including ten finalists from across the country. As usual, each competitor had just three minutes to present a scientific concept of their choice and was judged on the content, clarity and charisma of their presentation.

This year’s UK final was judged by Roger Highfield, Lewis Dartnell and Aarathi Prasad and was compered by the Science Museum’s resident comedy duo, Punk Science who also provided interval entertainment while the judges made their decision.

Following an “incredibly impressive” evening of performances the judges crowned biochemistry PhD student Alex Lathbridge as FameLab UK 2017 winner. Alex said: “FameLab is such a high standard of science communication. You’ve got some of the best science lovers all talking about science and to learn from them is just a once in a lifetime chance!”

Alex is joining the ranks of FameLab alumni, many of which have gone on to careers in broadcasting and performing, like Maggie Aderin Pocock (BBC Sky at Night) and Steve Mould & Matt Parker (Festival of the Spoken Nerd). Last year’s winner, maths teacher Kyle Evans, is now touring with his own show Born To Sum.
