Housed at the Pittville Pump Room is one of the UK’s most beautiful and prized gamelan, made in Java especially for Cheltenham Festivals a decade ago. This Gamelan Night opens up to everyone the visual and musical beauties of this Indonesian orchestra of gongs and metallophones.

Dance and Music from the Palaces of Java

Classical dance is still very much an integral part of Javanese cultural identity. A distillation of grace and control, dance is enjoyed and practised by all levels of society. Every unfurling movement and gesture, every shade of colour and fold of cloth in the intricate costume has been lovingly refined and considered over generations to express the aesthetic and spiritual values of the Javanese people.

The dancers are accompanied by Java’s famous bronze orchestra, the Gamelan; an ensemble of shining gongs and metallophones mounted on exquisitely carved frames. Dancers and musicians weave a shifting counterpoint of melodies and movement, by turns serene, playful, romantic and dramatic.

Dancers and musicians from the renowned Indonesian Arts Institute are supported by Gamelan players from the Oxford Gamelan Society and Cheltenham Community Gamelan Players
