The Festival Academy was founded by Martyn Brabbins in 2005 and has nurtured the best young talent from the UK’s conservatoires through a programme of coaching from professional musicians, community work and concert-giving.
For the first four years, the Festival Academy comprised a mixed ensemble of instruments, flexible to the needs of much 20th and 21st century repertoire. In 2009, Festival Director Meurig Bowen rang the changes and established a string orchestra for 2009 and 2010. They performed a huge range of repertoire in 2009 and the same musicians returned in 2010 for repertoire that included Brett Dean, John Woolrich, Grieg, Warlock, Britten and Schumann.
Inspired by celestial geometry and spherical trigonometry respectively, Saxton and Bray’s compositions truly embody our music and maths theme.
On either side of this beautifully crisp, buoyant music for piano and strings are two works for string orchestra alone by composers closely associated with Cheltenham.
For over two decades, Evelyn Glennie has been the percussion world’s most distinguished ambassador. So it is a pleasure to welcome her to Cheltenham for this showcase launch of our percussion-focused weekend.
