Friday 4 May 6.30pm – "Surviving in the new music industry"

More music is now available than ever before and is available from diverse sources that would have been unimaginable only a few years ago. However the paradox is that whilst we consume more than ever, we pay for less and less. In this talk Joe Wilson will examine how digital media and social networks have changed forever how musicians, songwriters and performers can make money and survive from their own music, and will suggest possible alternatives to the traditional record label model

Joe Wilson an accomplished and successful composer and producer who started his music career with the band Sneaker Pimps, selling over 2 million records worldwide. He has worked as a producer and remixer with artists as diverse as Placebo, Sophie Ellis Bextor and Ian McCulloch and his music has been used in feature films such as A-Team (2010), A Life Less Ordinary (1997), The Saint (1997) and Spawn (1997).

Saturday 5 May 7.30pm – Clem Burke Drumming Project

Steve Draper explains why you don’t have to be sporty to keep fit. Featuring a live demonstration he shows how a rock drummer has as much of a workout during a gig as a premiership footballer during a match. He discusses the ground breaking Clem Burke drumming project, a partnership between the University of Gloucestershire, the University of Cheshire and drummer Clem Burke, which has recorded data from 15 professional drummers, including Darrin Mooney, from Primal Scream and Matt Tong from Bloc Party, and has subsequently demonstrated the positive effects of drumming amongst primary school children.

Steve Draper is a Principal Lecturer at the University of Gloucestershire teaching Sport and Exercise Physiology. After competing internationally in his sport of volleyball Steve returned to education to study Sport and Exercise Sciences., going on to complete aPhD studying the energetics of middle distance running. He began working with Clem Burke four years ago, designing and conducting physiology tests for drumming that would allow for the quantification of energy cost. Steve is also a keen musician and plays the guitar in his spare time.
